At the end of September 2018, two of our developers took part in the "Advanced Angular Training: Enterprise Applications and Architecture" in Zurich.
Given our several years of experience with the framework, the Advanced Workshop was the obvious choice. Our day-to-day work with Angular had already given us a solid foundation, which the workshop allowed us to build on even further.
Before the session began, the workshop leader surveyed the individual expectations and expertise levels of the attendees. This meant that the topics covered during the training could be tailored to those specific needs. With a manageable number of participants, there was ample time to address individual questions in depth, without any rush. The instructor skillfully balanced the varying levels of knowledge in the room, shaping the course so that everyone was able to take away the maximum possible value.
What Topics Were Covered in the Angular Advanced Workshop?
The workshop spanned a wide spectrum of content.
One focus was the monorepo approach with workspaces, which was introduced with Angular 6. This setup makes it possible to create and develop multiple Angular applications within a single repository. These can be divided into applications and shared libraries, allowing reusable libraries to be built and published as NPM modules at the same time. Another benefit of the workspace approach is the ability to develop and deploy individual applications independently as microservices in the frontend.
Angular performance was another key area of the workshop. This section included lazy loading with the help of NgModules, along with practical guidance on how to sensibly split modules to structure an application. The training also covered data binding with the OnPush change detection strategy for components, as well as performance optimization through tree shaking during the build process. The distinction between the JIT and AOT compilers, and the Angular build optimizer, were also explained. A clear demonstration showed how server-side rendering and preloading can noticeably improve application performance.
Further topics included service worker caching and building a Progressive Web App with the framework. There were also detailed explanations of RxJS and its various schedulers. By exploring the differences between macro- and microtasks, we were able to broaden our understanding of synchronous and asynchronous programming.
Particularly engaging for us was the discussion of state management in general, and specifically with NgRx.
How Would You Summarize Your Takeaways from the Workshop?
All in all, the workshop offers an excellent mix of theoretical knowledge delivered through presentations and practical examples shown via live coding. In our view, this approach is ideal for consolidating newly acquired knowledge. The difficulty of the exercises assigned to reinforce what was learned was likewise adapted to each individual's skill level.
For developers who already have a basic grasp of Angular and want to go deeper, the Angular training provides a varied and well-structured path for further education, with a strong emphasis on real-world implementation.
Personally, we were able to close existing knowledge gaps and further expand our expertise.
